8 Myths about your cycle debunked

1. A NORMAL CYCLE IS EVERY 28 DAYS

While this isn’t completely a myth it’s important to note that a healthy period can range anywhere between 21 and 35 days. The only thing that doesn’t change is the Luteal Phase. This is exactly 14 days for everyone who is ovulating normally. Once the egg is produced is leaves a whole that produces the amazing hormone progesterone for exactly 14 days…longer if you’re pregnant.

2. A HEAVY PERIOD IS BAD AND COULD MEAN YOU HAVE OTHER HEALTH CONCERNS.

This depends on what you consider ‘heavy.’ Any type of loss around 50 ml is considered normal. Less than 25ml is considered scanty, and more than 80 is excessive. The best way to measure this, is by use of the DIVA cup, you can find one HERE at divacup.com.

3. WOMEN ARE BORN WITH ALL THE EGGS THEY’LL EVER HAVE.

An oldie but goodie study has recently been making it’s way into main stream media that has found that women who are capable of making new stem cells can actually make new eggs as well. This may be why a few of our wellness members are over 40!

4. THERE’S NO WAY TO TELL IF YOU REALLY OVULATED

Nope! If you felt it, you’re taking your basal body temperatures, you’re taking the LH strip tests, and you’re seeing fertile mucous, you’re definitely ovulating. If you’re seeing three of these symptoms, you’re definitely ovulating.

5. BIRTH CONTROL IS TOTALLY SAFE

Really? How many times do they have to come out with recalls and lawsuits to prove this to you? Better yet, lets make a birth control for men that creates weight gain, hair loss, and low libido and see how well it sells…oh wait they did, and no one wanted it. Quit putting up with the effects of this and take control of your cycle.

6. PAIN IS A NORMAL PART OF HAVING YOUR PERIOD.

Absolutely NOT! Pelvic Pain can sometimes be present if Progesterone is depleted. This amazing hormone is supposed to mature and thin the uterine lining, so without it you may experience cramping and higher blood flow because it’s more difficult to shed uterine lining.
Pain before your period is normal (ish) because your uterus grows to twice its size! Premenstrual breast pain may indicate an iodine deficiency, and plain during sex due to friction is common but not enough lubrication could be a sign of estrogen deficiency. Deep stabbing pain could mean ovarian cysts, endometriosis or serious pelvic infection and you should have this checked out by your doctor immediately! Mid Cycle ovarian pain is usually worse after coming off the pill. Painful period can often be helped by eliminating inflammatory foods and adding a magnesium supplement but you should ALWAYS consult with a health care provider.

7. YOU ONLY LOOSE BLOOD DURING YOUR PERIOD.

If you get grossed out easily, skip this section and just know there’s a whole lotta something goin’ on during this time of the month. A whopping 2/3 of your endometrial lining is sloughed off but is reabsorbed by the body but you are also shedding mucous and dead endometrial cells as well. Cool huh!

8. THE EGG RELEASED IS ABOUT 28 DAYS OLD.

Well, we’ve already established that not all healthy cycles are 28 days. However, each healthy egg released at ovulation is about 120 days old! Your tiny little follicles begin maturing and developing thanks to the help of Follicle Stimulating hormone and estrogen. When they are ready to be released, Lutenizing Hormone kicks in and one or two eggs burst from the ovary into the Fallopian tube.
